SP in Topeka Kansas:I'm glad we purchased the 4 Cinnamoats last summer. (We've always had multiple hummingbird feeders on 2 sides of the house in front of the two windows we watch from). The ants had always been a nuisance in the past being attracted to the hummingbird food sugar solution. Using cinnamon is such an easy repellent, especially since we have always had it on hand in the kitchen. Out side of the amount of humidity we can have in Kansas, how frequent to replenish the cinnamon varies from time to time because the moisture is absorbed by the cinnamon. So far the indication is, the ants have moved on elsewhere to dine. And yes, we still come across a lot of ants while working in the yard. Just not all over the feeder.

This is a scientific paper mostly about cinnamon oil and ants. They do not mention ground cinnamon as an ant deterrent.

I do not suggest using oil but instead use ground cinnamon.

Cinnamon oil is "VERY EXPENSIVE" and may evaporate quickly.

I have not tested Cinnamoat with cinnamon oil. I also do not recommend cinnamon sticks. I tied one to the base of the sheppard hook and of course it rained and destroyed the stick. I also tried a slurry of water and ground cinnamon. This formed a crust on top of the cinnamon and the ants just walked across it.

Ground cinnamon is cheap. I figure it cost me about .35 cents of store brand ground cinnamon to fill to the line in the moat.

The longest it lasted was 3 months in full sun. The feeders under my porch in the shade did not have any ants for the whole season. So, for approximately .70 cents of cinnamon you can get through a full hummingbird season.

This page is interesting. It suggests sprinkling ground cinnamon around the base of the shepherd hook. This would work until it rains. Also, what about hanging your feeder from a tree or a line. It also states cinnamon could be beneficial to hummingbirds' digestive system. You can find information that this may or may not be true. The design of Cinnamoat is rain proof which would not allow hummingbirds access to the cinnamon. I read a post about airborne cinnamon could harm the hummingbirds' lungs.
